The Miniatures opened at Big Bucks.
I had not seen them but I recall hearing that they opened for The Sam Roberts Band not too long ago, so I figured they would be pretty good as are all the bands who open for Sam.
They had a heavier sound than what I am accustomed to, which surprised me, yet they were active and held their own.
Then Brian Byrne came on with his band.
We had seen Brian and Gerry Finn as a duo at the Elixir in Kingston last summer. Brian is a Newfoundlander-now-Torontonian and just had a baby girl 7 weeks ago, named Lola Tennessee. She did not attend the show. I think you have to be 19 to get in.
He did bring Gerry and a whole band which were totally rockin!
What a great surprise - (he was way more mellow last year).
Got the whole crowd going for Matt Mays + El Torpedo.
Matt and the boys have been on a constant tour schedule and are rivalling The Trews for The Most Hard Working Band title.
We got tunes from their MM+ET album (Cocaine Cowgirl) and some that were new. There were four ladies from Australia who came here to see both Brian's and Matt's bands and were asking for On The Hood - they will have to come back for another show at another date though - they can't do everything!
Big Bucks looked pretty good - the stage lighting had improved since we were there last, - still hard to get a good shot of the drummers in the back without using a flash, but we did get smoke effects with back spotlights for a few choice shots.
